There is an old phrase: sub rosa, Latin for “Under The Rose”

Historically, it signified secrecy, confidentiality, and discretion.

Its origins trace back to ancient Greece and Rome, where the rose symbolized silence and protection. In one telling, the god of silence, Harpocrates, was given a rose to ensure certain truths remained safeguarded. In Roman banquets and meeting rooms, roses were carved into ceilings as a subtle reminder that whatever was spoken aloud beneath them was to remain sub rosa.

Over time, the phrase came to represent more than secrecy alone. It became a symbol of intimacy, understanding, and the unseen threads between people.

For me, Under The Rose is not about secrecy in the traditional sense.

It is about what the floral industry holds and quietly keeps.

The private messages carried between people through flowers.
The emotional weight behind arrangements, often unseen by anyone but the florist and receiver.
The true cost of flowers: of growing, harvesting, importing, and designing in collaboration with nature.
The deeper story of the land itself: the ecosystems, the seasons, and the reality of how much we take, and how much is wasted.

Flowers hold time, marking moments of love, grief, celebration, and transition. They often say everything without making any noise at all. In this way, they exist sub rosa: holding intention and story in a single form.

In my work, I am drawn to this quiet space where creativity naturally lives…

Each arrangement, each stem woven, is an exploration of that language. Not just how something looks, but what it carries. The story within it. The connection it creates. The legacy it leaves behind.

Under The Rose is becoming just that: an ode to the enduring, unspoken language of flowers.
